Similar as the name of the movie: "hero is back", this animation, as a leading hero in the Chinese movies, bring Chinese's best cartoons back.
It is very difficult for the producer to cost 8 years to make such a good movie, as the Chinese movie market is kind of a Market for Lemons, i.e., the low-quality movies may triumph in the market, while the real good ones may find it hard to survive. Yet, finally, here comes the "Monkey King: Hero is Back", a quasi-Hollywood-level animation.
Back to the movie, although there are still some shortcomings, the whole animation balances well in the story, characterization and visual effect. It is not simply a repeat of the story of the original novel "Journey to the West", but a story of someone who finds and defends his own idea. This is not a movie for kids, but a movie for someone who wants (still) to fight for his life.
