This was a masterpiece on reflecting the Great Purge of the Soviet Union. As the name of the movie indicated, the whole movie was covered in a increasing despair, like being burnt by the sun, the people can only slowly suffocated, but just being unable to get rid of it. With the story unfolded, the emotional entanglements among the various roles was more and more clear, but no one was able to unlock it; while at the same time, the pressure of the Great Purge was growing. Everyone waited for his own unavoidable death desperately, until the huge portrait of Stalin rose at the end.
The movie depicted the era of the Great Purge in a cruel way. Many scenes and props in the movie had profound meanings: the broken glass along the riverside and military exercises in holidays, implied crisis behind the calm in the country; the driver who always got lost and kept driving around, was an obvious metaphor for the lost mass controlled by the totalitarian; the huge portrait of Stalin rose up high in the sky, not only revealing the background of the era, but also suggesting that the point of the movie was the discussion to such dictatorship. The movie applied lots of picturesque rural scenery, contrasting the vicious burning sun.
