Part of the success of the movie was because of the era when the American audience was shocked by the Great Depression; however the arresting story and the far advanced visual effect are the main reasons for the success. Many parts of the movie have been the classics and be learned and mocked and repeated again and again, such as the fights between the great gorilla vs the dinosaurs, the snake and the planes. It influences many monsters movie such as "Godzilla".
The classical movie could be regarded as the start of the monster movies. No wonder Peter Jackson almost did a full copy+paste work in his "King Kong" in 2005 except for some visual effect improvement.
