Kubo and the Two Strings/魔弦传说

This is the best stop-motion animation so far, and one of the best animations in 2016. Amazing to see such a good animation with traditional Japanese culture and brand new stop-motion techniques.

The point of the animation is an American one: family's connection. Frankly, the conflict between Kubo and his grand father is a typical western cultural one, not very common in Eastern cultures. Yet, the whole story is coated perfectly in Japanese culture, which demonstrates the director team's deep understanding to the East. Well in the ending part, the director wisely chose a reconciling way rather than a killing way, a clever choice.

The two strings, as in the title, are really the connections between Kubo and his parents, the love in his family. No matter what happens, the connection inside always encourages Kudo to defend himself.

Again, I want to sing high praise for the unique stop-motion technique of this animation. Hardly can a stop-motion film change so many expressions and show fierce fights like this one. Thanks for the team's hard work!

Kubo: If you must blink, do it now. Pay careful attention to everything you see and hear, no matter how unusual it may seem. And please be warned: If you fidget, if you look away, if you forget any part of what I tell you - even for an instant - then our hero will surely perish.

Monkey: Your magic is growing stronger. You need to learn control. But when we grow stronger the world grows more dangerous.
