Manifesto/望道

This is apparently a propaganda movie about the first translator Chen Wangdao (陈望道) of Marx's "Manifesto". However, the whole movie seems a mix of half documentary and half feature film and the director may have been able to balance it better.

The movie focuses on the so-called revolutionary path of Chen, Wangdao and his interactions with some main historic figures such as Chen Duxiu (陈独秀).

It's funny that you would feel it weird if you are familiar with the history before 1949 because at the that time Chen, Wangdao was not even a communist party member and it is hard to say that he truly believed in the "communism" defined by Lenin and Mao, Zedong.
If you are not very sure about the history before 1949, you are still able to feel the strangeness about the Chinese communist party on the part of reunion of old Chen, Wangdao and old Chen, Duxiu in a small village in Sichuan Province, as the founders of CCP, both were forgotten by CCP. So it is very funny and weird to make it a propaganda movie.
