The movie was a milestone in Hong Kong movie history. Two men, with so opposite but actually so identical destinies, struggled between good and evil, right and wrong; they blurred their identities and their own self-images but struggled against the fate, knowing nothing about their future. Perhaps only by Tsai Chin's songs could they temporarily escape from the reality and earn a moment's peace.
The movie peaked the top of Hong Kong movies, and every movie element performed well, and lots of similar movies appeared later on. The signal of its being accepted by the international movie industry was the purchase of its script by Hollywood, where its U.S. version "The Departed" was produced. Good movies knows no boundaries.
