In my opinion, it balances well between different requirements: the big fans and the normal audience, the story and the game. You can not just show a game on the screen (the normal audience would be hard to understand) or you can not adapted the story too much (the game fans would be much unsatisfied). It is very hard to balance but I think the movie did it fairly well. I'm not a big fan, but I was happy to buy it and I'm interested enough to watch its sequels, that's enough.
Doubtlessly to know that the box office in China has been very huge, as lots of the audience view the movie as a memory of their youth era. The same thing happened before: "Transformer".
