This movie is an excellent windows for the audience to understand the historical Taiwan society in WWII. The director made this movie in a realistic, black humorous way to depict the country life in Taiwan in the last years of Japanese occupation in Taiwan. Doubtlessly to say the war brought lots of families tragedy, the movie was not limited to curse the war, but tried to picture the real life of normal people in that era.
