Being different from the first "The Godfather", this movie applied a parallel structure in the narration. One hand it showed us the audience how the young Godfather made his mark in an increasingly brutal competition; on the other hand, it showed us how the last Godfather opened his own business at the beginning, and to tell the audience the young Godfather's struggle inside. The audience could clearly see the changing of the American society.
和第一部《教父》不同，本片采用了平行叙事的结构，一方面讲述了年轻一代教父如何在日趋残酷的竞争中立足，一方面夹杂了上一代教父当年如何开疆拓土的回忆。由此展现了年轻教父内心中的挣扎。片中可以明显地感觉到美国社会变迁的脉络。
