Hacksaw Ridge/血战钢锯岭

Mel Gibson demonstrated his style clearly in this movie: war, religion, and men. The visual effect is very astonishing. The movie in my opinion is about the biggest conflict of one's own: conflicts between yourself (here it is Doss' faith) and the outer world.

This movie is a true story about Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector, who refused to carry a weapon in the battlefields. However, the war he participated was one of the most cruelest war in WWII: Okinawa islands war (and the movie portrays very real of the violence of this war). Thus came the conflicts between the cruel war and Doss' peace way. The conflicts, actually, came the first day when Doss enlisted himself in the army. He chose to believe the peace God, yet his job was in the battlefields where he might have to kill.

How to reconcile the conflicts? The audience can feel Doss' struggling until he heard someone injured badly called for his help in the cliff. Only at that time did he, in the movie, realize that his duty had been settled: he was here to save people, the more the better, and thus he made peace with his own conflicts inside.

The skills of this movie are very impressive, Mel Gibson insisted on real shooting and he paid off. The violence and cruelty of the bloody war appear so vividly in front of the audience. Is it a masterpiece after "Saving Private Ryan"? I think yes.
